It’s during Reconstruction (after the American Civil War). Thor’s the son and younger child of one of the wealthiest plantation owners in the South. His father, Odin, and sister, Hela, are… terrible people. They’re not happy about the South losing. He’s very lonely in his own home, and feels the weight of all his father’s expectations, and the bitterness of his elder sister.
Loki’s one act in a “Ten-in-One” sideshow. He’s a “freak”, due to the prominent, twisting veins covering his body, and a magician.
Because I really like the idea of Loki with the Guardians, and also now Thor with them (Rocket especially), they’re some of the other members of the sideshow.
Thor attends the carnival the sideshow’s playing at with a date, and he’s captivated by Loki. Can’t imagine why people would call him a freak. He looks beautiful, and his performance is fantastic. He returns two days later, pays to watch the show again, and pays to see the extra, not-child-friendly act after the main performance. Loki notices him there for the second time and winks at him.
Thor sticks around after the carnival’s winding down for the night, and he and Loki have their first face-to-face conversation. Thor finds Loki even more captivating after talking to him. He’s intelligent and mischievous. A breath of fresh air in Thor’s stressful existence. The carnivals only their for a couple weeks, but Thor spends a lot of time there.
At first Loki’s just trying to milk this cash cow for all it’s worth. It’s not like spending time with Thor’s a terrible hardship, and he keeps paying to see shows. Of course, Thor’s earnest admiration starts to win Loki over. Loki’s not used to people finding him interesting for more than a handful of tricks and his “deformity”. He eventually says something that makes him cringe a few days before they’ll be leaving. He says, “You’ll have to come see us in Georgia.” Thor kisses him that night.
Loki lies to Thor about when exactly they’re leaving and leaves without saying goodbye.
Shit goes down at home, Hela takes Thor’s eye out, and Thor chases after Loki’s sideshow, now a bit of “freak” himself. He ends up become part of an act and has a series of strange/freaky glass eyes. And Thor and Loki have lots of very illegal sex.
